Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
About Our Jewelry & Materials
What is spoon jewelry?
Spoon jewelry is handcrafted wearable art repurposed from vintage and antique silverware (spoons, forks, and other flatware). Each handle, bowl, or tine is carefully measured, cut, bent, shaped, and hand-polished into unique rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings, and keychains.
What kind of metals do you use?
Most of our pieces are crafted from vintage silver-plated flatware, while select pieces are made from solid sterling silver (.925) or high-grade stainless steel flatware. The metal type will always be clearly noted in the individual product description.
Will the jewelry turn my skin green or cause an allergic reaction?
Vintage silver-plated flatware typically has a base metal of brass, copper, or nickel-silver beneath the silver layer.
-
Skin discoloration (a faint greenish tint) is a harmless, natural reaction between certain base metals and skin moisture/pH levels.
-
If you have sensitive skin or a known nickel/metal allergy, we recommend choosing our Solid Sterling Silver pieces or applying a clear jewelry barrier (or clear jeweler's coat) to the inner surface of the band.
Are the scratches or markings normal?
Yes! Because our materials are authentic vintage flatware, many pieces carry faint character marks, natural patina, or gentle signs of past lives. These subtle variations make every single piece one-of-a-kind and part of the heirloom story.
Sizing & Fit
How do I know my ring size?
If you don't know your ring size, we recommend:
-
Visiting a local jeweler for a quick, complimentary sizing.
-
Using a plastic ring sizer tool (available affordably online).
-
Wrapping a narrow strip of paper snugly around your finger, marking where it overlaps, and measuring the millimeter length against a standard ring sizing chart.
Tip: Because spoon rings often have wider bands, they can fit a bit more snugly than thin delicate bands. If you fall between sizes, ordering a half size up is often recommended.
Are spoon rings adjustable?
While wrap-around style spoon rings have an open design, vintage flatware is sturdy metal. We size each ring precisely to your selected size before shipping. While slight manual adjustments can sometimes be made, we advise against repeatedly bending them back and forth, as this can fatigue or warp the metal.
Care & Maintenance
How do I care for my spoon jewelry?
-
Keep it dry: Remove jewelry before swimming, showering, washing dishes, or soaking in hot tubs. Chlorine and harsh chemicals accelerate tarnishing.
-
Avoid cosmetics: Apply lotions, perfumes, and hand sanitizers before putting your jewelry on.
-
Store properly: When not in use, store your jewelry in an airtight zip-top pouch or a cool, dry jewelry box away from humidity.
How do I clean and polish tarnished silver?
Silver and silverplate naturally patina over time when exposed to oxygen. Gently wipe your piece with a microfiber jewelry polishing cloth (such as a Sunshine cloth). Avoid harsh chemical dips or ultrasonic cleaners, which can strip antique blackened detail and natural patina.
